Frequently Asked Questions About Law Schools Vermont.com

How important are letters of recommendation?

As letters of recommendation are required for every law school, they make up an important part of the application process. LSAT scores probably weigh most heavily but it is important to understand that a strong letter of recommendation may outweigh test scores under certain circumstances.

Is there any particular major that will get me into law school?

The American Bar Association does not recommend any particular major in order to prepare for law school. More, it is recommended to major in what you like and enjoy studying for because your grades will impact your acceptance.

What classes will prepare me for law school?

Even though law school has no prerequisite courses for admission there are certain skills that every good lawyer has. Analytical thinking and problem solving, critical reading, writing and oral communication, research and task organization definitely belong to the profession. In order to learn those skills you may want to choose your classes accordingly.

What are the UGPA and LSAT requirements?

There are no fixed figures that reflect a minimum requirement. However, over the recent years, the undergraduate grade point averages and LSAT score averages were:

    LSAT

    • 75th percentile 166
    • Median 164
    • 25th percentile 160

    UGPA

    • 75th percentile 3.85
    • Median 3.71
    • 25th percentile 3.53

Is a foreign language required for law school admission?

No. A foreign language is not required for the admission to law school. However, research indicates that bilingual students posses sharper analytical skills and overall have a better understanding of the English language. At the same time, students who speak more than one language tend to be more creative and cognitively flexible than students who only speak one language. While this may be beneficial for the profession of an attorney, the study of a foreign language per se is not necessary for the admission to law school.

When should the LSAT be taken?

It is recommended that the LSAT is taken in the junior year or in the early fall semester of the senior year. Students tend to perform better after the junior year, however, there is no reason to take it earlier.

    Which transcripts should I send?

With the “Transcript Request Form” send all transcripts after the completion of your junior year. If you have any first semester senior transcripts, you should include those as well. This way, law schools will have six semesters of academic performance. Ensure the accuracy of your transcripts before you send anything.
